Communication Theory & Practice (CTP) Blog 1: Intrapersonal Communication and Career Goals

I’m most interested in the aspect of intrapersonal communication. I see it as the base level of all forms of communication. Whether through internal vocalization or reflective thinking, I think it’s interesting how we can be so in tune with ourselves. In my opinion, intrapersonal communication is essential to discovering who we truly are as individuals. Personal beliefs, opinions, and ideals are all discovered via this type of communication. Without it, the concept of identity wouldn’t be evident, and if that were the case, individuality would cease to exist.

Intrapersonal Comm Study by Leonard Shedletsky, PhD (University of Southern Maine)

I'm currently in my fourth year of college and my second at Alverno College. My career goals have changed many times over the past three years, but as I get closer to completing my undergraduate, I feel that I have finally discovered what I want to pursue long term after college. I'm aiming to complete my Bachelor's degree in Communications with a minor in Community Engagement and Activism. I'd like to then go on to attend graduate school to earn my Maters' in Cultural Foundations in Community Engagement and Education.

I have always loved to support others and aim to volunteer on a regular basis to not only understand the perspectives of others, but also to provide them with the care and support that all members of society deserve. That being said, I would love to one day work for a non-profit or community organization in an urban environment, specifically either Milwaukee or Chicago. I’m interested in assisting children and families that face judgment, and therefore, have no other choice but to undergo a lifestyle defined by social issues. I would like to help individuals struggling with concepts such as food and education insecurity, as well as healthcare and housing inequalities.

To gain more experience with children, I currently work as a high school paraprofessional in the Milwaukee Public Schools school District. If I am unable to secure a career in the community organization realm, I think it would be really interesting to continue working directly with students in the school setting. I would be interested in fulfilling a support staff role, such as a school social worker or even a teacher.

In my college experience and my career, I also want to explore how more general ideas, like racism and sexism, play into prejudice. I want to learn more about intersectionality and find practices that work to effectively discriminatory ideals. My biggest goals are to embrace diversity and promote inclusivity. I’m passionate about making changes for the greater good and I love assisting people. I feel that I can make a difference.

  1. I 100% agree with you when you described how intrapersonal communication as the base level of all forms of communication. Intrapersonal communication is very interesting to me, so I'm glad that you find it interesting as well! Also as a freshman student, I find it comforting to know that your career goals have changed a few times throughout your college education because I am still not entirely sure what I want to pursue long term after college.

  2. I also have had many career changes, major switches, changing schools…. But it is awesome to read what you are now so passionate about! I also think intrapersonal communication is very important. Like you said, this way you stay in tune with yourself. You won't lose your primary focus or passion for certain things as long as you continue to have intrapersonal communication with yourself. I think it is amazing that you want to go into a job helping others. There are not many people who want to work for non profits, so knowing you have a passion for it is amazing!! I do not volunteer much, but would like to start when I have the free time!
